Superheroes

Filed under: Uncategorized — by msmowat @ 1:17 am

My favorite superhero of all time has always been Batman-this predates the movie.  My admiration for Batman stems from a place and time before the top cinema draw of the summer, The Dark Knight.  (Although I must add, the movie was phenomenal as far as superhero movies go; a little drawn out near the end, it still maintained superb entertainment qualities).  I’ve always liked Batman because I think his costume is the coolest- he has the cape, the mask, the superhero symbol, the armor- not to mention the Batmobile- wow.  Plus, with all his fame and fortune, he helps out ordinary people who find themselves in extraordinary predicaments, and often times, danger.  Gotham City is the ultimate symbol of the negative forces found within our world today.  On the one hand, it’s a shame we don’t have the giant spotlight with the bat in the middle to flash across the nighttime sky; yet, on the other, having to rely on ourselves means having to be ready to be a hero.

My number one superhero of all time who doesn’t live in Gotham City, but rather in Michigan, is my Mom.  She’s the hardest working person I know.  She’s raised six children, four of whom still live at home. She juggles a full time job at the office and a full time job that never goes away and puts you on call 24/7- being a mom.  I try to help her out whenever I can.  She rarely takes a vacation and she always puts her kids before herself.  That’s a superhero.  The phrase “everyday heroes” is now cliche, but it really is the everyday heroes- parents, soldiers, firefighters, volunteers, etc- that save us.

Leadership

Filed under: Uncategorized — by msmowat @ 7:52 pm

Leadership to me is when one person is able to give hope to other people.  When Dr. Martin Luther King jr. told people about his dream that all people would be treated equally, he not only gave people hope about what the quality of life should have been, but he also gave them a vision of what it could be in the future.  He inspired everyone regardless of race using words and wisdom.  He stood up for his beliefs among crowds of people whose values did not match his; at a time when some of his own fellow country men truly believed he was a lesser human being than they were.  Because of his persistency to discuss equality, America would change forever.  He isn’t remembered for wealth or celebrity as we know it today; instead, he is remembered for his powerful voice, his presence, and his determination to make the United States a home suitable for his own children and for future generations.  His ability to conjure hope and to speak fearlessly about truth and about what is good are what make him one of many stand-out leaders of the 20th century.
